Winter in India: Weather, Months and Regions

Winter in India is not one season. In the same week you can ski in Kashmir, sunbathe in Goa and sit around a campfire in the Thar Desert. That is why picking the right region matters more than picking the right month.

When Is Winter in India?

This guide uses November to February as the planning window. December to February is the core winter, and January is usually the coldest month in the north. November is a transition month, with early rain still possible in the far south.

Places to Visit in India in November

November suits warm and cultural trips: Goa, Kerala, Rajasthan and the Rann of Kutch, where Rann Utsav opens on 1 November. Kaziranga has already reopened for the season, and Corbett’s Dhikala zone usually opens in mid-November. Himalayan snow is limited, Rohtang Pass is closing for winter, and Puducherry can still see rain.

Places to Visit in India in December

December has the widest choice. Snow arrives in Gulmarg, Manali and Auli, the Hornbill Festival runs from 1 to 10 December, and Goa and Kerala are at their best. Two things to plan around: fog begins in mid-December, and prices climb from about 20 December.

Places to Visit in India in January

January is the coldest month and the best for deep snow. It is also excellent for Rajasthan, Kerala, Goa and the national parks. Expect the Jaipur International Kite Festival around 14 January, but also the worst of the northern fog.

Places to Visit in India in February

February is a good shoulder month. Fog eases after 15 February, late-season snow remains in the mountains, and prices fall after the New Year rush. Goa Carnival and the Jaisalmer Desert Festival (dates tentative) both fall this month.

Best Snowfall and Mountain Destinations in India in Winter

Snow is never guaranteed on a particular day, but these five places give you the best chance. Do not plan a trip around Rohtang Pass or high routes such as Sarchu and Baralacha La, which close for winter.

1. Gulmarg: India’s Winter Sports Paradise

Gulmarg is India’s best-known ski resort and the most reliable place for deep snow, with snowfall usually heaviest in January and February. Ride the Gulmarg Gondola towards Apharwat Peak for ski runs and views. Skiing, snowboarding and heli-skiing are all offered, and beginners can simply enjoy a snow walk or sledge ride.

  • Winter weather: nights -8°C to -2°C, days 2°C to 7°C.
  • Top sights: Gulmarg Gondola, Apharwat Peak, Strawberry Valley and St Mary’s Church.
  • Getting there: fly to Srinagar (about 56 km away), then drive. The nearest railhead is Jammu Tawi (about 290 km).
  • Budget: mid-range to luxury. Ski gear hire is around ₹1,500–₹3,500 a day.
  • Watch out for: extreme cold, avalanche advisories, gondola closures in high wind, and snow chains needed on the climb from Tangmarg. Christmas and January to February are the busiest times.

2. Manali and Solang Valley: Snow Adventures and Mountain Views

Manali is the easiest way to combine snow, cafes and mountain views on a modest budget. Solang Valley is the main snow-play area, and the Atal Tunnel opens up snowy scenery on the Lahaul side. Snowfall is best from December to February.

  • Winter weather: nights -5°C to 2°C, days 5°C to 12°C.
  • Top sights: Solang Valley, Old Manali, Hadimba Temple, Atal Tunnel and Vashisht Hot Springs.
  • Getting there: fly to Bhuntar (about 50 km) or Chandigarh (about 290 km). The nearest main rail stations are Chandigarh and Ambala.
  • Budget: budget to mid-range. Basic rooms start from around ₹1,200 a night.
  • Watch out for: Rohtang Pass is closed in winter, black ice between Kullu and Manali early in the morning, and heavy traffic near Solang from 20 December to 5 January.

3. Auli: A Beautiful Destination for Skiing

Auli is a quieter ski destination in Uttarakhand, with wide slopes and close views of Nanda Devi. Skiing usually runs from late December to February, depending on snow depth. It suits couples and active travellers who want space rather than crowds.

  • Winter weather: nights -4°C to 1°C, days 4°C to 10°C.
  • Top sights: Auli Ropeway (Joshimath to Auli), Auli Lake and the Gorson Bugyal trek.
  • Getting there: fly to Dehradun Jolly Grant (about 270 km) or take a train to Rishikesh or Haridwar, then drive via Joshimath.
  • Budget: mid-range to high.
  • Watch out for: landslides and frost on the Rishikesh to Joshimath road. Confirm ropeway and slope operations before you book, as access depends on the weather. The skiing championship dates for 2027 are not confirmed.

4. Shimla and Kufri: A Classic Winter Hill Station

Shimla suits families and first-timers who want a gentle hill-station break rather than a big snow adventure. Snow in town is possible but not guaranteed, usually in January. Kufri nearby offers snow rides when conditions allow, and the toy train from Kalka is a highlight.

  • Winter weather: nights -1°C to 4°C, days 8°C to 15°C.
  • Top sights: The Ridge, Mall Road, Jakhoo Temple, Kufri and Christ Church.
  • Getting there: fly to Chandigarh (about 120 km), or take a train to Kalka and then the toy train to Shimla.
  • Budget: budget to mid-range.
  • Watch out for: very high crowds around Christmas and New Year, busy pedestrian streets, and icy roads after snowfall.

5. Gangtok and North Sikkim: Himalayan Views and Snow-Covered Lakes

Gangtok is a good winter base, with Kanchenjunga views on clear days and snow at Tsomgo Lake and Nathula Pass. North Sikkim (Lachen and Yumthang Valley) opens only conditionally in winter, so treat it as a bonus rather than a promise. Losar, the Tibetan New Year, falls in February.

  • Winter weather: Gangtok nights 1°C to 5°C and days 10°C to 16°C; Lachen and Yumthang nights drop to between -10°C and -2°C.
  • Top sights: Tsomgo Lake, Nathula Pass, Baba Mandir, MG Marg and Rumtek Monastery.
  • Getting there: fly to Pakyong or Bagdogra (about 125 km), or take a train to New Jalpaiguri. Pakyong flights are often cancelled in bad weather, so keep Bagdogra as a backup.
  • Budget: mid-range.
  • Watch out for: protected-area permits for Tsomgo, Nathula and North Sikkim (your hotel or driver can usually help), altitude sickness, and sudden road or pass closures.

Best Warm Winter Destinations in India for Sunshine and Beaches

If you want to escape the cold, head south or to the coast. Days of 28°C to 33°C and calm seas make November to February the best beach season.

6. Goa: Beaches, Nightlife and Christmas Celebrations

Goa is at its best from November to February, with dry days, calm seas and a full events calendar. North Goa (Baga) is lively and busy, while South Goa (Palolem) is quieter. Fontainhas, the Old Goa churches and Dudhsagar Waterfalls give you plenty to do beyond the sand. Events include the Feast of St Francis Xavier on 3 December, Christmas and New Year parties, and Goa Carnival in February.

  • Winter weather: nights 19°C to 22°C, days 30°C to 33°C.
  • Top sights: Baga Beach, Palolem Beach, Fontainhas, Old Goa churches and Dudhsagar Waterfalls.
  • Getting there: fly to Dabolim or the newer Mopa airport, or take a train to Madgaon or Thivim.
  • Budget: mid-range to high, with big price rises from 20 December to 5 January.
  • Watch out for: strong currents at beaches without lifeguards, heavy traffic in North Goa, and sold-out hotels at Christmas and New Year.

7. Andaman and Nicobar Islands: Tropical Beaches and Water Adventures

Calm seas and clear water make winter the best season for scuba diving and snorkelling. Base yourself in Port Blair, then use catamaran ferries to reach Havelock and Neil Island. Cellular Jail in Port Blair is the main history stop.

  • Winter weather: nights 22°C to 24°C, days 29°C to 31°C.
  • Top sights: Radhanagar Beach, Elephant Beach, Neil Island and Cellular Jail.
  • Getting there: fly to Veer Savarkar International Airport in Port Blair, then take ferries such as Makruzz or Green Ocean between islands.
  • Budget: mid-range to high.
  • Watch out for: ferries that sell out weeks ahead, rough seas that disrupt schedules, and forest permits for some islands. Check current permit rules for your nationality before you travel.

8. Puducherry: French Architecture and Coastal Relaxation

Puducherry works best from December, once the northeast monsoon rain tapers off. Spend your time walking the French-style White Town, relaxing on the seafront and visiting Auroville. The International Yoga Festival is usually held in January.

  • Winter weather: nights 20°C to 22°C, days 28°C to 30°C.
  • Top sights: White Town, Promenade Beach, Auroville and Sri Aurobindo Ashram.
  • Getting there: fly to Chennai (about 135 km) or Puducherry airport, or take a train to Puducherry.
  • Budget: budget to mid-range.
  • Watch out for: rain in November, a rocky Promenade Beach that is unsafe for swimming (use Paradise or Eden beach instead), and Matrimandir viewing that needs advance online booking.

Best Cultural, Heritage and Desert Destinations in India During Winter

Winter is the only comfortable time to explore forts, deserts and old cities on foot. Days are mild, skies are clear and festivals fill the calendar.

9. Jaisalmer: Desert Safaris and Golden Forts

Winter is the best season for the Thar Desert: warm days for exploring the golden fort and cold nights for camping near the Sam Sand Dunes. Camel safaris and desert camps are the main draw. The Jaisalmer Desert Festival is expected in February, with dates still tentative.

  • Winter weather: nights 5°C to 9°C, days 20°C to 26°C.
  • Top sights: Jaisalmer Fort, Sam Sand Dunes, Patwon Ki Haveli and Kuldhara.
  • Getting there: fly to Jaisalmer, or to Jodhpur (about 280 km). Jaisalmer also has its own railway station.
  • Budget: budget to luxury. Desert camps cost around ₹3,000–₹12,000 a night.
  • Watch out for: freezing desert nights, unaccredited camel-safari operators, and a permit for some interior zones of the Desert National Park.

10. Jaipur: Royal Palaces, Forts and Winter Festivals

Jaipur has mild, dry, sunny weather that suits long days of sightseeing. Between the monuments, browse the local markets and try Rajasthani food. The Jaipur Literature Festival is usually held in January (confirm dates), and the International Kite Festival takes place around 14 January.

  • Winter weather: nights 8°C to 12°C, days 22°C to 27°C.
  • Top sights: Amber Fort, City Palace, Hawa Mahal, Jantar Mantar and Nahargarh Fort.
  • Getting there: fly to Jaipur International Airport or take a train to Jaipur Junction.
  • Budget: all budgets, from hostels to palace hotels. Composite tickets are available for many ASI monuments.
  • Watch out for: morning fog on the Delhi to Jaipur expressway and busy sights throughout the winter.

11. Rann of Kutch: Experience the Great White Desert

The White Rann is a vast salt desert that glows under a full moon. Rann Utsav, the tent-city festival at Dhordo, runs from 1 November 2026 to 7 March 2027, with crafts, food and folk performances. Kala Dungar viewpoint and the Harappan site at Dholavira make good add-ons. Check dates on the official Rann Utsav page.

  • Winter weather: nights 10°C to 14°C, days 25°C to 30°C.
  • Top sights: White Rann, Dhordo Tent City, Kala Dungar and Dholavira.
  • Getting there: fly to Bhuj (about 80 km from Dhordo) or take a train to Bhuj.
  • Budget: mid-range to luxury, as tent-city packages are premium.
  • Watch out for: a mandatory White Rann entry permit, wet salt mud off the marked paths, and crowds on full-moon nights and from 24 December to 2 January.

12. Varanasi: Spiritual Experiences Along the Ganges

Cooler weather makes winter the comfortable time to visit the ghats. Go for the evening Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat and a sunrise boat ride, then visit Kashi Vishwanath Temple and Sarnath. Dev Deepawali, the festival of lights, usually falls in November.

  • Winter weather: nights 7°C to 11°C, days 20°C to 25°C.
  • Top sights: Dashashwamedh Ghat, Assi Ghat, Kashi Vishwanath Temple and Sarnath.
  • Getting there: fly to Lal Bahadur Shastri Airport or take a train to Varanasi Junction.
  • Budget: budget-friendly.
  • Watch out for: dense fog that delays flights and trains in December and January, and poor winter air quality.

Best Winter Destinations in South India: Hills, Tea Estates and Backwaters

Southern hills are cool and misty rather than cold, and the backwaters are calm and dry. This is the gentlest region for a winter trip.

13. Munnar: Tea Gardens and Misty Mountain Views

Munnar has crisp mountain air, tea gardens wrapped in morning mist and good walking weather. Visit the Tea Museum, spot the endangered Nilgiri tahr at Eravikulam and walk through the plantations.

  • Winter weather: nights 10°C to 14°C, days 20°C to 25°C.
  • Top sights: Eravikulam National Park, Tea Museum, Mattupetty Dam and Anamudi Peak.
  • Getting there: fly to Cochin (about 110 km) or take a train to Aluva or Ernakulam, then drive.
  • Budget: budget to luxury.
  • Watch out for: fog on the ghat roads from Kochi, and advance Eravikulam passes through the Kerala Forest Department. The park usually closes for a period in February and March, so check before you go.

14. Alleppey (Alappuzha): Backwater Houseboat Experiences

Dry weather and calm canals make winter the best time for a houseboat cruise across Vembanad Lake and through the Kuttanad paddy fields. Two days is enough for one overnight cruise and a visit to Marari Beach. The Cochin Carnival in nearby Fort Kochi runs from late December to 1 January.

  • Winter weather: nights 22°C to 24°C, days 30°C to 33°C.
  • Top sights: Vembanad Lake, Marari Beach and Kuttanad.
  • Getting there: fly to Cochin (about 85 km) or take a train to Alleppey.
  • Budget: mid-range to high. Houseboats cost around ₹7,000–₹25,000 a night.
  • Watch out for: unlicensed private boat operators. Check the licence and life jackets before you board.

15. Coorg (Kodagu): Coffee Plantations and Peaceful Hills

Coorg is a calm choice for slow days among coffee estates, waterfalls and misty hills. Homestays are popular, and plantation walks are the best way to see the area.

  • Winter weather: nights 11°C to 14°C, days 22°C to 26°C.
  • Top sights: Abbey Falls, Raja’s Seat, Namdroling Monastery in Bylakuppe and Dubare Elephant Camp.
  • Getting there: fly to Kannur (about 90 km) or Bengaluru (about 285 km), or take a train to Mysore (about 120 km).
  • Budget: mid-range, with homestays the usual choice.
  • Watch out for: narrow single-lane plantation roads with poor lighting after dark, and busy weekends.

Best Wildlife Destinations in India for Winter Safaris

Cooler weather makes safaris more comfortable, and winter is good for birdwatching. Tiger sightings can be more frequent in April and May when waterholes dry up, but winter is far easier on visitors. Wrap up warm, as open-jeep safaris at dawn are cold.

16. Jim Corbett National Park: Tigers, Elephants and Birdwatching

Corbett is India’s oldest national park and a short trip from Delhi. The Dhikala zone usually opens in mid-November, and winter brings good birdwatching along the Kosi River. Safaris are by jeep, and zone permits must be booked in advance.

  • Winter weather: nights 4°C to 8°C, days 20°C to 24°C.
  • Top sights: Dhikala, Bijrani, Corbett Waterfall and the Kosi River.
  • Getting there: fly to Pantnagar (about 80 km) or Delhi (about 240 km), or take a train to Ramnagar.
  • Budget: mid-range to high.
  • Watch out for: weekend safari slots that sell out, morning fog that reduces early visibility, and strict rules about staying inside the vehicle.

17. Ranthambore National Park: A Popular Destination for Tiger Safaris

Ranthambore is one of the most popular tiger parks in India. It reopened on 1 October 2026 and stays open until 30 June 2027. The park also has a hilltop fort and a lake, Padam Talao, where wildlife gathers.

  • Winter weather: nights 8°C to 12°C, days 22°C to 26°C.
  • Top sights: jungle safaris across Zones 1 to 10, Ranthambore Fort and Padam Talao.
  • Getting there: fly to Jaipur (about 160 km) or take a train to Sawai Madhopur Junction (about 10 km).
  • Budget: mid-range to ultra-luxury.
  • Watch out for: core zones that sell out months ahead, with last-minute bookings usually left with outer zones. Book through the Rajasthan Forest Department as early as it allows.

18. Kaziranga National Park: Home of the One-Horned Rhinoceros

Kaziranga is the best place in the world to see the great one-horned rhino. Assam Tourism lists November to April as the best season. The park reopened for 2026 to 2027 on 3 October, jeep safaris have resumed, and elephant safaris were reported to start from 1 November (confirm with the park). Winter also brings migratory birds.

  • Winter weather: nights 9°C to 13°C, days 22°C to 25°C.
  • Top sights: Kohora and Bagori safari zones and Kaziranga Orchid Park.
  • Getting there: fly to Jorhat (about 90 km) or Guwahati (about 200 km), or take a train to Furkating or Guwahati.
  • Budget: mid-range.
  • Watch out for: dense morning fog, which can hide wildlife on 6:00 am safaris. A later slot around 7:30 am often gives clearer views. See Assam Tourism’s Kaziranga page for official season details.

19. Kohima and Kisama Heritage Village: Experience the Hornbill Festival

Nagaland’s Hornbill Festival runs from 1 to 10 December 2026 at Kisama Heritage Village, with traditional Naga dance, music, crafts and food. Outside the festival, Kohima’s war cemetery and the Dzukou Valley trek make this a rewarding winter trip. Check dates on the Tourism Nagaland website.

  • Winter weather: nights 5°C to 9°C, days 16°C to 20°C.
  • Top sights: Kisama Heritage Village, Kohima War Cemetery and Dzukou Valley.
  • Getting there: fly to Dimapur (about 74 km) or take a train to Dimapur, then drive.
  • Budget: mid-range, with price surges during the festival.

20. Darjeeling: Tea Gardens and Kanchenjunga Views

Clear winter skies give Darjeeling its sharpest views of Kanchenjunga. Get up early for sunrise at Tiger Hill, ride the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway toy train and visit a tea estate. It is one of the more affordable hill stations in this guide.

  • Winter weather: nights 2°C to 6°C, days 10°C to 14°C.
  • Top sights: Tiger Hill, Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, Batasia Loop and the Peace Pagoda.
  • Getting there: fly to Bagdogra (about 70 km) or take a train to New Jalpaiguri (about 75 km).

Important Winter Travel Tips for Visiting India

How to Deal with Fog and Transport Delays

India’s official fog-preparedness season runs from 15 December 2026 to 15 February 2027, and authorities expect flight delays, cancellations and rescheduling (see the Press Information Bureau advisory). Trains in the north can run hours late.

  • Keep a spare day between train journeys and flights.

  • Do not rely on high passes such as Rohtang being open.
  • Allow time to acclimatise at altitude, especially in North Sikkim.
